What Is Microchipping?

Microchipping is a safe, easy and quick procedure that can help to make a big difference in the life of your family pets. With the use of microchipping, pet owners can rest easy knowing that they have a greater chance of being reunited with their pets in the event that they run away, become lost or if they are stolen.

Our vet care team has the knowledge and skills necessary to make the microchipping procedure quick and virtually painless for your furry friends. Using a microchip that is about the size of a grain of rice and a certified microchip implanter device, the entire procedure only takes a few minutes but the benefits will easily last a lifetime.

The microchip itself is made up of 4 separate components that include the capacitor, antenna, connecting wire and a durable covering. Each microchip is battery-free and safely sealed within a biocompatible glass and sheath to avoid migration in your pet’s body. This means that once it is put in place it will stay put and not cause any irritation for your beloved pets.

What are the Benefits of Microchipping Family Pets?

While it is important for pet owners to outfit their dogs and cats with traditional methods of identification like collars and tags in case of an emergency situation, microchipping goes one step further. Pet tags need to be replaced regularly and can fall off, be removed or simply become hard to read, making it difficult to return a lost pet to their owners. But with this more advanced identification method, you can rest easy knowing that your pet can be easily identified by most shelters and veterinarians nationwide.

In fact, studies have shown that microchipping is the best method o9f returning lost pets to their rightful owners. In recent studies, dogs that were microchipped were returned to their owners more than 74 percent of the time. When you compare to only 13 percent of dogs without microchips making their way back home, the evidence in favor of microchipping is clear.

While the microchips cannot be tracked, they cannot be removed. So if at any time your pet makes its way to a veterinarian's office, they will be scanned and quickly returned to you. Additionally, some doggie and cat door manufacturers are now taking advantage of this technology to offer pet doors that can recognize your pet’s microchip to open only for them. This is a great way to keep unexpected guests from entering your home, while still allowing your pets the freedom to go outside and explore.

How Does Microchipping Work?

Microchips are implanted by our Pensacola veterinarian with a quick and virtually painless procedure. Similar to a routine vaccination, the microchip is implanted under the skin using an implantation device. The optimal implantation site can vary but in most cases, it is implanted between the shoulder blades. No anesthesia is required as a simple pinching of the skin will pull it upwards until taught.

Immediately following the successful implantation of the microchip, we will help you complete the necessary forms to register your information to the chip number. While your pet should not experience any pain, we do recommend avoiding rigorous activity and playing for a period of 24 hours after implantation.
