Spaying and Neutering

What is Spay and Neuter Surgery?

Spay and neuter surgery refers to the common surgical procedures used to render family cats and dogs unable to reproduce a litter of kittens or puppies. Spaying involves an operation that removes both ovaries and typically the uterus from your female animals. This operation can be safely completed through a small incision in the abdomen or the flank of your female animals and requires little recovery time.

Neutering refers to the surgical removal of both testicles from the scrotum via a small incision. Similar to spaying, this beneficial surgery requires little recovery time.

Benefits of Spaying and Neutering Your Family Pets

While there are certain pet owners who choose to breed their pets professionally, the majority of pets would lead more happy and healthy lives without reproducing. Pet overpopulation is one of the biggest issues facing dogs and cats in the US and each year, more animal shelters take on unwanted litters. Spaying and neutering your family pets is a great way to help reduce the number of accidental litters across the country and leads to fewer stray animals looking for a home.

Additionally, spay and neuter services can provide certain health and wellness benefits to your beloved family pets. When male dogs and cats who have been neutered, they will have a lower risk of testicular cancer and a potentially lower risk of developing prostate cancer as well. Female cats and dogs who are spayed can also enjoy a number of different health benefits including a lower risk of certain uterine cancers and cancers that affect the reproductive system. They are also at a reduced risk of suffering from uterine infections that can turn fatal and enjoy better overall health when they are spayed before they come into heat for the very first time.

Overcome Behavioral Issues

Cats and dogs who are spayed or neutered will also have a much lower risk of dealing with common behavioral issues. With a lower chance for dealing with behavioral problems, your family pets are less likely to wander away from home, get lost and typically enjoy a longer lifespan too! Spay and neuter services also help to prevent them from getting into fights with other cats and dogs and leads to an overall lower level of aggression, making them much easier to train and get along with small children.

When Should I Spay Or Neuter My Pet?

We recommend spaying or neutering your pet before the onset of sexual maturity if possible. This is helpful in avoiding unwanted behavior like marking their “territory” or urinating on furniture. For most females, this is before 4 months and for males before they are 5 months old. Typically dogs and cats can be spayed or neutered as early as 6 months or when they weigh at least 2 pounds.
